Astronomy for Teachers
A Summer School class for Teachers Through the University of MississippiRainwater Observatory will be the site of a one week workshop June 2008. This course is offered for 3 semester hours graduate of undergraduate credit through the University of Mississippi. It is listed in the catalog as a physics course.
The course will be held at Rainwater Observatory near French Camp. Local participants can come as day students. Participants from a distance can be housed in dormitory rooms at nearby French Camp Academy. Meals are available as well.
Instructors for the course will be Dr. John Frassinelli and Observatory
Director James Hill. Dr. Frassinelli will share Hands-On Astronomy Activities
during the afternoons. James Hill will explain modern topics in astronomy
during the mornings. Each student will prepare a paper on an astronomy
topic of their choosing.
In addition to classroom activities there will also be
opportunities for participants to observe the Sun through the
Observatory's telescopes, and to become acquainted with the evening sky through
informal sky parties in the evening. Teachers will also learn how to use the
Planetarium’s Spitz A-2 Planetarium Projector. You will have the opportunity to
use research-grade telescopes and related equipment including the largest
telescope in Mississippi.
Also available to teachers is the observatory’s Astronomy Education Resource
Center, with its collection of classroom activities, books, videos, slides,
posters, and models. These materials may be checked out and used in their
classrooms.
